Organised by the Army, the Ten Tors takes place every May, this year between the 9th and 10th May. Being the only walking event solely catering for young people in Britain, it is a very special event.
2400 teenagers in 400 teams of 6 start the event walking distances of either 25 miles, 35 miles or 45 miles. The distance is covered over 2 days and one night camping on the moor, with the youngsters navigating their way across Dartmoor checking in at 10 different Tors on route.
Not all make it to the end of the event! Its a great team building experience for the participants and there are many stories of comrades carrying another team members pack just to get them to the end.
The start at Oakhampton Army base is an amazing spectacle with all teams starting en masse at the sound of the Army cannon firing. Army helicopters hovering overhead add to the atmosphere.
The finish is just as emotional and awe-inspiring with crowds cheering in all the teams as they arrive at Oakhampton Army base.
For some its a life changing experience but whether you have a child involved or not its well worth making the journey to see!
